global export

In the spice trade, there are very few commodities which have faced dynamic shifts same as cardamom globally. For the past decades, cardamom exports have been continuously fluctuating because of the climate conditions and changes in the preferences of the customers and added to the trade regulations. Guatemala, a country in Central America is dominating the entire international cardamom market and India is balancing between high consumption which is domestic and selective exports. This industry presents both opportunities and challenges for exporters.

Demand is rising in the Middle East, Europe and North America, so, the exporters should stay up to date on price trends, regulatory requirements and about emerging markets. In this blog, I will be covering the key trends that shape the cardamom trade globally and what stakeholders should be aware of to stay competitive.

Producers & Exporters – Leading

Cardomon Cultivation booms in the Tropical zone, where only a few key countries are predominant in International Production and exports:

  • Guatemala:

It’s the Largest Cardomom exporter in the world, contributing over 60% of International exports, which includes major Buyers in the Middle East as this spice has become an essential ingredient in Arabic coffee and traditional dishes

  • India:

A Top Producer but with limited exports due to high domestic demand. India is known for its Malabar and Mysore’s premium quality grades. Malabar cardamom is medium-sized pods which has a strong aroma whereas Mysore cardamom is larger and is rich in cardamom oil.

Primarily, India exports to UAE, Saudi Arabia, the USA and some European countries where there is a lot of demand for cardamom which is especially of high-quality, no pesticide.

  • Indonesia, Tanzania, Nepal and Srilanka:

These countries have emerging suppliers leading to niche markets and regional high demand.

Guatemala’s success in exports is featured in large-scale commercial farming and diligent pricing. In comparison, India focuses more on quality and specific exporting than Guatemala.

International Consumption and Demand Sequence:

Vital Importing Countries:

The Primary consumers of Cardamom Include:

Some of the industries, I am listing below where the demands have raised,

  1. Beverages & Food – Cardamom is mostly used in the food industry like in baked goods, then in spiced beverages and confectionaries.

Price Trends & Fluctuations of the Market

     Factors that influence Price Volatility

         3. Market Demand –  During Festival seasons like Ramadan and Diwali leads to a Price spike.

For example in 2021, Guatemala’s cardamom prices increased due to low production and high demand from Gulf countries, while Indian prices peaked during the festive season.

Pricing and Grading

Cardamom is classified based on size, colour, texture, and oil content. Higher grades bring back premium rates, specifically in demand of the market regarding organic or sustainably formed variance.

    • India’s Spices Board & APEDA – Concentrated more on quality control and export facilities.
